STELLENBOSCH UNIVERSITY shadow shadow

Stellenbosch is home to the oldest Afrikaans university in South Africa. It is a true University Town with a proud academic history and unique atmosphere that have been compared to Heidelberg, Oxford and Yale, amongst others.

The town's academic history stretches back to the mid-nineteenth century when the Stellenbosch Gymnasium was established in Dorp Street (since proclaimed a national monument). Later the Gymnasium became Victoria College and is known today as the University of Stellenbosch, home of the Maties.

The University has not only produced hundreds of political leaders and achievers in the academic and business fields, but also rugby Springboks, including the legendary Dr Danie Craven. Currently over 25 000 students annually enroll at Stellenbosch University each year.

Courses cover a wide spectrum from medicine, law, business sciences, engineering, forestry, music, agriculture, wine making, languages, geology, geography to polymer science and various other disciplines.

The University campus is near the historic core of Stellenbosch and student life forms an integral part of this, the Heartbeat of the Cape Winelands.
