HISTORY & HERITAGE
As a premier tourist destination, the name Stellenbosch conjures up images that very few other South African towns or cities can.
Founded in 1697, by Governor Simon van der Stel, this is the oldest town in South Africa and the second formal settlement created after the establishment of Cape Town in 1652.
History is reflected in many of its buildings with spectacular examples of Cape-Dutch, Georgian and modern Victorian architecture. These historical buildings with their simple lines, fine detail and elegant proportions, bear witness to its proud and dignified heritage. The verdant green Oak trees, etched against white walls diffuse the heat of summer, and transform the streets into soft, shady tunnels.
The town, ideally situated in a magnificent mountain valley, boasts a mild Mediterranean climate and is the ideal destination from which to explore the Winelands, Cape Town, the Peninsula and the many tourist attractions that the area has to offer.
Stellenbosch is the center of the country's wine industry, and is also home to the world-renowned University of Stellenbosch, also known as "Maties". Many national and international companies have their headquarters here.
We recommend that you obtain a Stellenbosch on Foot brochure from the Tourism Office and discover all the wonderful old buildings and the stories they tell or alternatively book a guided tour with one of our local guides, departing regularly from Stellenbosch Tourism & Information in Market street.
